It's very common among programmers, so you'll have a multitude of tools on the web. I'm not sure if down the road the approach to leave tasks in your notes will do more harm than good - but if you pick up the convention to leave comments with the TODO keyword around, there's plenty of tools that can show you tasks. I bet there's some solution to scan "in the background" and cache the result, because scanning all files from disk every time you want to look at the agenda will probably take forever. I’m using a workaround with Drafts 5 at the moment – but there’s definitely room for Hmm in theory, yes! You'd have to set the variable org-agenda-files so that the Agenda scans all files in building the agenda. I would say about TaskPaper exactly what you said above about The Archive – the only problem I have with it is the missing iOS client (Taskmator doesn’t work for me, partly because it doesn’t support the same Saved Searches). I’ve tried to get going with it a few times, but always given up after about 1-2h of trying to understand how it all works and returned to TaskPaper because it seemed far more intuitive and less cluttered. The simplicity, power, and functionality of The Archive is such a refreshing contrast. It seems like SO many other apps are over-designed while also being unintuitive, clunky and limiting. Doing so has made me realise just how much I like the design of The Archive. I've spent an ironic amount of time over the last day looking at different organisation/to-do apps. Looks like I may have to dive in and try figure out Org mode. If you haven’t read any James before, these wonderful glimpses of an absolute mistress of her craft will show you what you have been missing. James shows her darker side in The Girl Who Loved Graveyards, which at the same time is both sinister and poignant, hinting as it does at madness. James pokes fun at her own profession, making her narrator a barely successful writer of cosies, then switches back to brutal reality to put the whole story into perspective.īut it’s not all jolly. Details such as blackout precautions, programmes on the wireless and King George’s moving Christmas Day speech make it all so convincing. The longest of these superb stories, The Murder of Santa Claus, captures the characters and events you would expect in the Cotswold manor of a rich, unpleasant man in the 1939 Christmas of the ‘Phony War’. James’ sense of place and time is immaculate. Its opening lines: “Mildred Millcroft, seated in the front left hand seat of the Jaguar, thumped her copy of The Times into a manageable shape for reading the social pages” sets the tone perfectly for what is to follow. My own favourite is the clever and often hilarious Mr Millcroft’s Birthday, in which an octogenarian exerts retribution on his snobbish and greedy son and daughter. All, bar one, receive a fitting comeuppance, but it is meted out by the forces of natural justice and punctuated by James’ wit and ability to poke often quite sardonic fun at the poses and pretentions of the middle classes. Revenge is at the heart of almost all – the slighted husband, the bullied wife, unhappy children – but James’ great strength is that none of the protagonists are brought to justice in the way the reader would expect. The six murderous tales in this remarkable collection reflect all that experience. Many of her later books call on her knowledge of closed communities, such as a publishing house, barristers’ chambers, a theological college, or a private clinic. She began writing in the mid-1950s and many of her mystery novels are set against the backdrop of bureaucracies such as the criminal justice system and the National Health Service, in which she worked from the 1940s until her retirement in 1979. When her army doctor husband returned deeply damaged from the war and had to enter a psychiatric institution, she was forced to provide for her two daughters, who were mostly cared for by his parents. She was forced to leave school at 16 because her family did not have much money, and worked in a tax office, before becoming an assistant stage manager with a theatre group. Much of her writing was based on her own experiences. She picked up and wove together motifs from the pre-war best of the Golden Age of crime writing with a deep psychological insight to create gripping, suspenseful tales. James, despite her worldwide success with her 14-book series, all but two of which were adapted for TV or film, featuring policeman and poet Adam Dalgleish, was also a mistress of the short story format. This new collection of the short stories of PD James, a companion to volume to The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories, only serves as a reminder of what we are now missing. When Baroness James of Holland Park died in November 2014, crime writing lost one of its most incisive, ingenious and brilliant authors. But for the sake of security, it is always recommended to keep backup copies of your important data in different locations. We have reached out to MacPaw (the company behind Hider 2 and Encrypto apps) regarding this issue, and they have assured that the current version of these apps are “debugged and polished”. However, a lot of users on the Internet have complained about losing their data while protecting them. Note: In our tests, we didn’t come across any issues with either Hider or Encrypto. Encrypto also provides the option to add the file to Hider if you wish to keep it hidden.Įncrypto is available as a free download from the Mac App Store. The encrypted file is similar to a password protected archive, where you need to provide a password every time you wish to open the file. You can also save the encrypted copy of the file on your Mac. Once the file is encrypted, you can share it via Mail, Messages, AirDrop, etc. To encrypt a file or folder using Encrypto, simply drag and drop the item into the application window and provide a password. It is a small app which allows you to encrypt a file with a password before sharing it with anyone. This is where Encrypto proves to be useful. You have to ensure that anyone third person who intercepts the file that you want to send, cannot read its contents. But what if you want to securely send a file to someone else over the Internet. Encrypt and share data with password with Encrypto Tags: Draft Doging, Great War, World War One Categories: Criminal Liability, Defamation, Speech Comments TrackbacksĬorporate Social Responsibility & The Law According to the Court, being identified as one was just the sort of innocuous name-calling that was “regarded as a part of life for which the law of defamation affords no remedy.”Ĭopyright © 2023, Foley Hoag LLP. Without reference to military service, war, or even general laziness, the Court viewed the statement merely as a generic “form of verbal abuse.” By this time, of course, “Slacker” was best-known simply the name of a movie about unemployed hipsters. One exception was in 2010, when an Arizona woman, whose manager had called her a “B***h, Idiot and Slacker,” argued that the term was susceptible to a defamatory meaning. generally applied to a person who unlawfully evaded or attempted to evade his military duty.” However, since the war ended, it “ha come to have another equally well-known meaning, referring to one who evades or attempts to evade some other duty.” The Court held that, since the word was now “capable of the two meanings, it would have been error for the trial judge” to instruct the jury that it necessarily imputed a lack of patriotism or a failure to perform a military duty.Īlthough the term “slacker” surfaced again during World War II, it eventually came to be disassociated with military service altogether, and is rarely mentioned in published defamation opinions after the 1920’s. On appeal, the Hawaii Supreme Court first noted the war had been over for nearly a year by the time the article was published. At trial, the judge refused to instruct the jury that the “primary” or “ordinary” meaning of the word “slacker” was the evasion of military duty. A local newspaper viciously attacked him for this, accusing him of letting down the public and disgracing the “Hawaiian race.” Even worse, the article called Kahanamoku a “slacker.” Kahanamoku sued the newspaper for defamation. On or about October 29, 1919, Kahanamoku pulled out of a swimming exhibition due to muscle pain. Advertiser Publishingdemonstrated just how fast this changed occurred.ĭuke Kahanamoku was a world famous surfer, swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. Without an active draft, the explosive nature of the word “slacker” quickly diminished. The armistice with Germany was signed on November 11, 1918, effectively ending the war for the U.S. However, the holding amply reflects the universally understood poisonous import of “slacker” during that period. The Court ended up reversing the case on other grounds, namely that the real culprit had been a rogue employee not under the control of the company. Whether or not this would be so in time of peace we need not determine.” To falsely publish such an accusation of any person was manifestly libelous per se. During the war it was unquestionably a term of the severest reproach, well understood by all men, and calculated to subject its bearer to hatred and contempt in practically every community in the land. “ The word is not found in prewar lexicons, but had its genesis as to use and meaning in the conditions following our entrance into the World War. The Alabama Supreme Court resoundingly disagreed, holding: The company asserted that the word “slacker” was not so awful that it was defamatory per se (actionable without proof of specific harm), and the jury should have been so charged. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, and the company appealed. Lillich brought a defamation suit against the mining company. On July 18, 1918, while the war was raging, the words “List of slackers: John Lillich” were painted near the entrance to the Choctaw Coal mine in Walker County, Alabama. Many libel cases arose from the use of the term “slacker” during the war, but perhaps the most well-known was Choctaw Coal & Mining Co. The Velvet Underground finally ventures outside the New York bubble when the band visits Los Angeles in 1966. While these points are (hopefully) familiar to anyone who has studied Warhol and his scene, they deserve repeating considering how often the Factory is romanticized. Of course, Nico got the last laugh and proved herself to be far more than a muse. (“The group needed something beautiful to counteract the kind of screeching ugliness they were trying to sell,” Factory filmmaker Paul Morrissey once said). That attitude inspired Warhol to add an attractive German singer and actress named Nico to the band, against Reed’s wishes. But the Factory’s emphasis on appearance, according to film critic Amy Taubin, who posed for Warhol, created a “damaging” environment in which women were celebrated for their outward image, not necessarily their talent. Warhol saw the band as a vehicle to combine music, art, and film into one big multimedia extravaganza and dreamed up the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a series where the Velvets played alongside dancers, performance artists, video projections, and a spectacular light show. The result is profoundly poetic: As Reed’s sister, Merrill Reed Weiner, describes her brother’s unsettled youth, a 20-something Reed gazes back, staring into the void of his own discomfort. The most poignant use of archival footage comes via Warhol’s screen tests, the silent video portraits in which subjects were asked to sit still and not blink. A curated crash course in mid-’60s art history, the film returns the band to its original fine art context. The frequent use of split-screen places new interviews with Cale, Tucker, and others in conversation with the work of contemporaries like photographer Stephen Shore, godfather of American avant-garde cinema Jonas Mekas, and the “ daddy” of minimalist music, La Monte Young. There’s so much to see here, with Haynes’ team reportedly licensing two-and-a-half hours of moving images for a two-hour film. The Velvet Underground solves this problem by utilizing other artwork from the era. There are clips of members lounging around the Factory and plenty of photos, but the band was rarely filmed performing. Warhol, who served as VU’s early manager and benefactor, was an obsessive documentarian of the world around him, and yet very little traditional footage of the band exists. This approach was partially out of necessity. Instead, he uses them as a springboard to create a moving visual tribute to New York’s experimental art scene of the 1960s. But for the most part, Haynes is unconcerned with capturing a definitive vision of the Velvet Underground. The film follows a relatively chronological narrative, beginning with the origin stories of VU’s core lineup (Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Moe Tucker), escalating with the release of 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, and concluding with the band’s dissolution and Reed’s solo career in the early ’70s. His 1987 short Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story used Barbie dolls to paint a portrait of the tragic pop singer, 1998’s Velvet Goldmine put a Citizen Kane spin on the ’70s glam-rock scene (with details cribbed from Bowie and Bolan), and 2007’s I’m Not There posed the unlikely question: What if six famous actors channeled different sides of Bob Dylan to make the most interesting biopic ever? The Velvet Underground is not so blatantly deconstructivist. The Bardavon/UPAC film series is sponsored by Marshall & Sterling, Herzogs, Rondout Savings Bank and The Upstate Coalition for a Fairgame.Haynes has an impressive track record of making provocative films that cut through the mystique of musical icons. Proof of vaccination is required for this event (see below) Film: The Velvet Underground (2021) Presented with Upstate Films “Chris” was one of the rare, few people who took interest in the Vigor model when it was near-new. Last updates were posted in 2007 but by then the Vigor model was already 13 years old and a good chunk of the Vigor fanbase had likely moved on to the wildly successful new Acuras being offered on the showroom floor, like the crowd favorite 3rd generation 2004-2008 TL. In the decade since, the website has become a ghost town. Here is a (grainy, tiny, characteristic of those early days) photograph of a meet in Seattle in the early 2000s. In 2005, the website hit its peak with about 100,000 total hits, including one specific day in March that had over 900 views. More and more members began joining the community at, with “Timely Topics” monthly DIY tutorials being posted by contributors and with meets being organized in select regions. In January 1999, a “Yahoo!” group was founded for the Acura Vigor and Legend Club. The Acura Vigor Club was an online community started in 1998-1999, right around the time that I was spending my teenage years browsing (still alive for archive purposes) and (long gone). Consider the fact that there were more than ten times as many Legends sold as Vigors. While the Legend community has been able to support enough interest to host an annual meet every year since 2005, the Vigor club members held regional meets until about the early 2000’s and then the fire died out. The Vigor enthusiast network in general was just a lot smaller. This middle sibling was forever overshadowed by its larger, more popular, big brother the Legend. I shared some history about the model when I picked up my own Vigor last July in Denver. My friend Ryan made a snide remark about how little I will probably wear the shirt.īridging the gap between the Integra and the Legend, the Vigor split the difference between 4 and 6 cylinders with its 2.5-liter, 176-horsepower inline-five-cylinder motor. Several weeks ago I bought a new T-shirt on that says “Alive With Five.” It felt appropriate that I wear the shirt to a meet-up on Monday night with newfound friend Chris in Scottsdale, Arizona who happens to be an old-school Acura 5-cylinder fan just like me. Feast your eyes on some “BG-30P” code paint deliciousness! This here is a double-dose of a color that we all saw back in the 90’s that has long since been replaced by today’s boring silvers, grays, charcoals, and…. That and a four speed stick shift would have turned it into a…real GT!īack to the real world: this lovely Dart GT has graced a nearby street for several years now. Whoa! Now that would have really helped my dad’s real Dart, whose slow manual steering could be a handful in the fast tight twisties of Northern Baltimore County’s back roads. In perusing the 1969 Dart brochure, I came across an unexpected tidbit: an optional fast 16:1 ratio manual steering gear. Why there were two hot Darts is a good question the same reason there was a Dodge RT and Super Bee, obviously. The GTS and the Swinger 340 were the hot stuff. And what was the case in 1963 was still very much the case in 1969: the 170 inch six was still standard. The raised expectations of its standard 170 inch six are a reflection of the GT’s role as a trim package with bucket seats, and no more. And a ’59 Studebaker Lark V8 was certainly a legitimate sports compact, even without the buckets.īut the Dart GT does have the distinction of being the first American car to use the “GT” acronym, if we agree that Studebaker used the full name “Gran Turismo”, but not the letters “GT”, especially as a suffix to a line of cars. Obviously it wasn’t this bucket seat pretender like all the others of its ilk were of course trying to keep up with that runaway success, the Corvair Monza. And the deception was there right from the get-go: “America’s First Sports Compact”. The Dart GT goes right back to its first year as a compact, 1963. But I like to listen to news and talk radio in the car, and now I don’t have to take my little portable radio in the car anymore.Īnd it came with bucket seats, Paul! Very European! A real Gran Turismo! But I did get a radio!īut the underground, I mean classical music station is on FM. I’m quite comfortable in the summer without it I just take off my jacket and one of my two sweaters. You’re right, I need to be able to enjoy my drive to Hopkins more. So I got one with the optional Charger 225 cubic inch six. They said I’d have to order one, that no dealer would have one in stock. Oh, not the standard engine, the 170 cubic inch six, Paul. Paul, I took your advice and got a Dart GT!Ī GT? But that’s missing the key ingredient, the “S”. This 1969 version will have to stand in for what my father proudly came home with in that alternate scenario: It’s time for you to have something a bit classier. And the GTS comes standard with a Rally suspension which will make it handle so much better. I have a better idea! I can attach a little (easily removable) piece of wood on the back of the gas pedal so that you’ll never be able to worry about accidentally having all that power on your hands. You could just not decide not to open the throttle all the way. Anything more than that is grossly superfluous and possibly dangerous in the wrong hands (mine).īut Papa that’s only an extra 25 hp. The most horsepower a car should ever have is 250. In an alternate scenario, what if he had taken up my admonition to buy a Dart GTS? You know, the one that came standard with the highly underrated 275 hp 340? Or the optional Magnum 383? And slick black vinyl seats to enhance that summer time experience.īut my father was also surprisingly impulsive at times, and on rare occasions even highly suggestible. It had the base 170 cubic inch slant six, three balky gears on the column, slow manual steering, and little 9″ manual drum brakes. I’ve written up that mostly dismal chapter here. He bought a baby-shit brown stripper Dodge Dart, with absolutely no options, like this one but certainly without the white wall tires. You might think that he might have gotten something with a wee bit of comfort for that drive, which included lots of stop and go traffic and Maryland’s famously sweltering summer heat. In 1968, he traded in his Opel Kadett A for a new car, for his twice-daily 45 minute commute to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was a professor of Neurology and the head of the EEG Clinic. It was an eye opener for her.Īlthough he was quite status conscious and always easily impressed with others’ nice automobiles, he denied himself brutally, insisting on wearing his automotive hair shirts proudly. Of course, that’s just the automotive ones as Stephanie will attest, his many eccentricities and personality characteristics are impossible to convey readily with words you either experienced them, or you didn’t. By now, many of you are undoubtedly familiar with the automotive eccentricities of my dear departed father. |
